PPC Management in Adelaide: Does Your Agency Need to Be Based in Adelaide?
Good PPC management in Adelaide depends on how well your campaigns are aimed at Adelaide customers, not on where the manager’s desk is. What matters is suburb and radius targeting, the search terms your local customers actually use, and a manager who asks how much work you can take on.
PPC (pay-per-click) is advertising where you pay each time someone clicks your ad, most commonly through Google Ads, Google’s advertising platform. This guide to PPC management in Adelaide covers when a local agency helps, what to check in any Adelaide campaign and what to ask before you hire.
We’ll be upfront: Star Digital Marketing is a full-service digital marketing agency in Spring Hill, Brisbane, that works as an outsourced marketing department for small and medium businesses across Australia. We don’t have an Adelaide office. PPC management is one of our seven services, and this is how we’d judge any provider, including us.
Do I need a PPC agency based in Adelaide?
No, you don’t need an Adelaide-based agency to run ads in Adelaide, but you do need one that understands your Adelaide market. Google Ads shows your ads by the location settings in the campaign, not by where the agency sits.
For PPC management in Adelaide, a local agency can help when face-to-face meetings matter to you, or when it already knows your industry in South Australia. It doesn’t help if the campaign itself is set up loosely. Judge the work, then the postcode.
Can an interstate agency manage Adelaide campaigns?
Yes. An interstate agency can manage Adelaide campaigns well if it sets the location targeting correctly, learns which areas you serve and builds keywords around how your customers search.
Three things are worth checking with any interstate provider:
- Who you deal with. Ask who your one point of contact is and how you reach them.
- What you can see. Ask whether the ad account is in your name and what the monthly report shows.
- The account time zone. At the time of writing, Google Ads runs ad schedules on the account’s time zone. Adelaide sits half an hour off Brisbane, and daylight saving changes which way. An account set to the wrong city runs your ads half an hour early or late.
You can read who leads our agency and where we’re based.

How do I target only Adelaide suburbs with Google Ads?
Use location targeting set to people in your area, then narrow it to the suburbs, postcodes or radius you actually serve. At the time of writing, Google Ads Help on location options explains the two settings that matter most.
Set “Presence”, not the default
The default option, “Presence or interest”, can show your ads to people outside Adelaide who have shown interest in it, for example by searching for it. The “Presence” option limits ads to people likely to be in, or regularly in, your targeted locations.
For a business that serves customers on site, such as a trade, a clinic or a shop, “Presence” is usually the better fit. Google notes that location targeting is a best effort, so some people outside your area may still see an ad.
Choose the right shape for your area
Google Ads lets you target regions, cities and postcodes, depending on the country, or a radius of at least 1 km around an address. Pick the one that matches how you work:
Your business | Targeting that tends to fit |
A shop or clinic people visit | A radius around the address, sized to how far customers will travel |
A trade or service that goes to the customer | The postcodes or suburbs you’ll actually drive to |
A business serving all of greater Adelaide | The city, with exclusions for areas you won’t service |
A business delivering statewide or nationally | Separate campaigns, so Adelaide results aren’t mixed with the rest |
For example, a plumber based in Norwood who won’t travel to the Adelaide Hills can exclude those postcodes, so no budget goes on jobs they’d turn down.
Use the words Adelaide customers search with
Local search terms are often the difference between a cheap click and a wasted one. People search by suburb, by region (“northern suburbs”, “Adelaide Hills”) and by “near me”. Read your search terms report, which lists the actual phrases people typed, and add the local versions that bring enquiries.

Local search alongside your ads
Ads and organic search work well together, because the same local customers see both. Your Google Business Profile, the free listing that shows your business on Google Maps and in local results, should list the same areas your ads target. Google Business Profile Help explains how to set your service area.
Over time, SEO, the work of improving your website so it appears in unpaid search results, can reduce how much you rely on paid clicks. SEO takes months, while ad campaigns take weeks to optimise. Because one team runs both for our clients, ad data shows which local keywords convert, and those get priority in SEO.
Is PPC worth it in a smaller capital city market?
PPC can be worth it in a smaller capital city market, but it depends on what a customer is worth to you and what a click costs in your industry there. A smaller market usually means fewer searches, so it takes longer to gather enough data to know what works.
A worked example, purely to show the arithmetic: if a new customer is worth $1,500 to you and one in five enquiries becomes a customer, each enquiry is worth about $300. If your ads bring enquiries in for well under that, the sums work. If they can’t, we’ll say so before you spend.
Then check capacity. If your team can only take on a few more jobs a week, the campaign should be sized to that, so you don’t pay for enquiries you can’t service. We ask that question on the first call.

What should Adelaide businesses ask a PPC manager?
Ask any PPC manager, local or interstate, who owns the ad account, how conversions are tracked, what the monthly report shows and what the contract commits you to. Our checklist of nine questions to ask a PPC management company covers each one.
For Adelaide specifically, add three more:
- Which suburbs or postcodes would you target, and which would you exclude?
- Is the location option set to “Presence” or “Presence or interest”, and why?
- Which local search terms would you start with, and which would you block?
A manager who answers those clearly understands your market, wherever they’re based.
How we handle PPC management for Adelaide businesses
We work with businesses across Australia the same way we work with Brisbane ones. You own your ad accounts, analytics, domain and website, and they stay yours if we part ways. The monthly report is a short plain-English summary of what we did, what it produced and what’s next.
We tailor the work instead of selling bronze, silver and gold packages, so a small Adelaide business isn’t paying for a plan built for a national one. Compared with a marketing hire or separate freelancers, our specialists are already assembled, with one point of contact and one monthly invoice.
