Digital Marketing Campaign Strategy for 2027: A 90-Day Plan for Australian Small Businesses
A digital marketing campaign strategy for the first 90 days of 2027 needs four decisions: what a new customer is allowed to cost, which one or two channels to use, what order to do the work in, and how you’ll know it worked. Settle those before January and the quarter runs on a plan instead of on guesswork.
Digital marketing means winning customers online, through search, ads, social media, email and your website. This guide walks through each decision in order, with a week-by-week plan for January to March 2027 that you can follow yourself or hand to someone else.
Star Digital Marketing is a full-service digital marketing agency in Spring Hill, Brisbane, that works as an outsourced marketing department for small and medium businesses across Australia. The plan below is the same shape as the written action plan we give business owners after a strategy call.
Why Australian businesses should plan 2027 campaigns now
Plan your digital marketing campaign strategy in October or November, because the work that pays off in January has to start before the Christmas break. SEO takes months, and ad campaigns take weeks to optimise, so a plan written in January tends to produce results in March at the earliest.
Many owners return from the break with fresh plans and budgets, and some customers do too. Being ready when they start searching is worth more than starting from scratch the same week.
How do I build a digital marketing campaign strategy?
Build a digital marketing campaign strategy in four steps: set your target cost per customer, choose one or two channels, sequence the work over 90 days, and decide how you’ll measure it. Each step depends on the one before it.
Step 1: Set the target cost per customer
Work out what a new customer is worth to you, then decide how much of that you’re willing to spend to win one. That figure is your target cost per customer, and every later decision gets measured against it.
A worked example, purely to show the arithmetic: if a new customer brings you $2,000 in gross profit over a year and you’d spend a quarter of that to win them, your target is $500 per customer. If one in four enquiries becomes a customer, each enquiry can cost up to $125.
Check capacity at the same time. If you can only take on ten more customers a month, the plan should aim for about that many, so you don’t pay for enquiries you can’t service.
Step 2: Choose one or two channels
Start with the channel closest to where your customers already look, and add a second only if you have the time and budget to run both well. Spreading a small budget across five channels usually means none of them gets enough to work.
Channel | Speed | Tends to suit |
Paid search ads (Google) | Fast: enquiries can start soon after launch, then improve over weeks | Services people actively search for, such as trades, health and professional services |
Social ads (Meta) | Fast to launch, slower to convert | Visual products, local businesses and reaching people who aren’t searching yet |
Slow: months before results show | Businesses building for the long term, alongside a faster channel
Fast with an existing list | Businesses with past customers who might buy again or refer others
Organic social media | Slow and steady | Businesses whose customers follow and share, such as hospitality and retail |
For most service businesses, a sensible pair is paid search for enquiries now and SEO for later. A business with a large customer list should look at email first, because it reaches people who already know the business at little cost.
Step 3: Sequence the work over 90 days
Do the work in an order where each step makes the next one count. Tracking comes before ads, and ads come before you judge results.
Weeks (2027) | Focus | What gets done |
1–2 (January) | Foundations | Conversion tracking set up and tested; landing pages and Google Business Profile checked |
3–4 | Launch | First channel goes live; email to past customers if you’re using email |
5–8 (February) | Learn | Weekly reviews; waste cut; ads and messages tested |
9–12 (March) | Decide | Budget moved to what works; second channel added or scaled; plan for the next quarter |
Conversion tracking records which clicks or visits became enquiries, calls or sales. Without it, nothing in weeks 5 to 12 can be judged fairly.

Step 4: Decide how you’ll measure it
Choose three or four numbers before you start, and look at them the same way every month. If you only look at results after the quarter, it’s too late to change anything.
Good starting measures are:
- Enquiries, by channel.
- Cost per enquiry, your spend divided by the number of enquiries.
- Cost per customer, compared with the target from step 1.
- Where enquiries come from, compared with before the campaign started.
What should a 90-day marketing plan include?
A 90-day marketing plan should include your goal, your target cost per customer, the channels and budget, a week-by-week sequence, and the measures you’ll report on. It should fit on one or two pages, so you’ll actually use it.
The business.gov.au guide to a marketing plan covers the wider business plan this sits within. A 90-day plan is the working version of your digital marketing campaign strategy: specific enough to act on this week, short enough to change in a month.
Which marketing channel should a small business start with?
Start with the channel your customers already use to find businesses like yours. For most service businesses that’s Google search; for businesses with past customers, it’s often email.
If you’re emailing customers, follow the basics of the Spam Act 2003: get consent, identify your business as the sender and include a working unsubscribe link. The ACMA’s guidance on avoiding spam explains each one.
How do I set a marketing budget?
Set your marketing budget from your target cost per customer and the number of customers you can handle, not from a percentage someone else uses. Multiply the two, then add any management or production costs.
A worked example, again purely illustrative: if your target is $500 per customer and you can take on 10 new customers a month, your ad budget ceiling is about $5,000 a month. In the first month, expect to spend part of that learning what works rather than at the target cost.
How do I measure whether a campaign worked?
A campaign worked if it produced customers at or below your target cost, in numbers you could service. Compare cost per customer against the target from step 1, and enquiries against where they came from before.
Look at the trend across the quarter as well as the totals. Cost per enquiry should fall as waste is cut. If it hasn’t moved by week 8, that’s the time to change the channel, the offer or the landing page, not to wait.
Who should write your digital marketing strategy?
You can write this digital marketing campaign strategy yourself if you have the time and the numbers. Digital marketing strategy services make sense when you don’t have the time, or when the channels need skills you’d otherwise have to hire.
If you’re weighing up help, a few common worries, answered plainly:
- “An agency costs more than doing it myself.” Compare it with your own hours, or a hire’s salary plus on-costs, not with zero.
- “I’ll lose control.” Keep your ad accounts, analytics, domain and website in your own name. Our clients do, and they stay theirs if we part ways.
- “I won’t understand the reports.” Ours is a short plain-English monthly summary of what we did, what it produced and what’s next.
- “I’m too small.” We tailor the work instead of selling bronze, silver and gold packages, and we say so when something isn’t worth doing.
Our digital marketing strategy services start from the same four decisions in this guide, and our director runs businesses of his own, so the plan starts from your margins, capacity and cash flow.
