Email Marketing for Australian Businesses

The channel with the best return on investment in digital marketing, and the one almost every small business neglects. We build the list, write the campaigns, set up the automation that runs without you, and show you what it earned.

You Own Your Email List. You Rent Everything Else.

Think about where your audience actually lives.

Your Facebook followers belong to Meta, who decide how many of them see your posts and charge you to reach the rest. Your Google rankings belong to an algorithm that can shift overnight. Your ad audiences disappear the moment you stop paying.

Your email list is the only audience you own outright. Nobody can throttle it, nobody can price you out of it, and if every platform you use changed its rules tomorrow, you’d still be able to reach every one of those people.

Most businesses have one and do almost nothing with it.

What usually goes wrong

  • The list exists but nobody emails it. Years of accumulated customer addresses, used twice. Meanwhile the business pays for ads to reach strangers.
  • Everything is a broadcast. The same message to everyone — past customers, cold leads, people who bought last week. Relevance collapses and so do open rates.
  • No automation. Every email is written and sent manually, so it only happens when someone remembers. Which is rarely, and never in the busy months.
  • It’s all promotion. Nothing but discounts and announcements, so people stop opening, then unsubscribe.
  • Nobody knows if it’s working. Open rates get reported; revenue doesn’t. And since Apple’s Mail Privacy Protection inflated open rates across the board, that metric means considerably less than it used to.
  • Compliance is an afterthought. Which under the Spam Act 2003 is a genuine risk, not just a best practice. More on that below.

What Our Email Marketing Service Includes

1. Strategy and audit

We start with what you’ve got — list size, where it came from, how engaged it is, what’s been sent before and how it performed. Then we agree what email is meant to do for this business: repeat purchases, nurturing slow-converting leads, reactivating dormant customers, or simply staying front of mind.

Different goals produce completely different programmes. Worth settling first.

2. Platform setup or migration

We configure the account properly — domain authentication (SPF, DKIM and DMARC), sending reputation, list structure, tags and segments, and tracking that connects back to your website and sales.

3. List growth

A list that isn’t growing is shrinking — people change jobs and addresses constantly. We build the capture points: website signup forms, lead magnets worth downloading, checkout opt-ins, and post-enquiry capture.

Grown properly, with genuine consent. We don’t buy lists, and neither should you — purchased lists destroy sending reputation, convert at close to nothing, and breach the Spam Act.

4. Segmentation

The single biggest lever on email performance. New subscribers, active customers, lapsed customers, high-value buyers, people who browsed but didn’t buy — each gets messaging that fits where they are.

A segmented campaign to 400 relevant people reliably outperforms a broadcast to 4,000.

5. Campaign design and copy

Written by our copywriting team and designed to your brand — mobile-first, because most of your list reads on a phone. Subject lines written and tested rather than guessed at.

6. Automation that runs without you

This is where email stops being a task and becomes an asset. Set up once, runs indefinitely:

  • Welcome sequences — the emails people are most likely to open, because they just signed up. Usually the highest-converting thing in the whole programme.
  • Abandoned cart recovery — for e-commerce, typically the single highest-revenue automation available.
  • Post-purchase sequences — delivery updates, how to use it, review requests, and the follow-on purchase.
  • Lead nurture — for businesses with a long sales cycle, staying useful to someone who isn’t ready yet.
  • Re-engagement — winning back subscribers who’ve gone quiet, and cleanly removing those who won’t come back.
  • Date-triggered — renewals, service intervals, birthdays, annual reorders.

7. Testing

Subject lines, send times, offers, layouts, calls to action. Tested systematically rather than changed on a hunch.

8. Reporting on revenue, not opens

Delivery, clicks, conversions and — where we can attribute it — revenue per campaign and per automation. Open rates are reported but treated with appropriate scepticism, for the reason given above.

Compliant With the Spam Act, Properly

Australia’s Spam Act 2003 is stricter than most business owners realise, and the ACMA does enforce it. Penalties for commercial email sent without consent run to substantial figures, and “they’re an existing customer” is not automatically sufficient.

Every programme we run meets the three requirements:

Consent

Express or inferred, and documented either way. We keep a record of how and when each subscriber opted in — which matters enormously if a complaint is ever made.

Identification

Every email clearly identifies your business and includes accurate contact details.

Unsubscribe

A functional, obvious unsubscribe in every message, honoured within five working days. We set it to process immediately.

We’ll also audit an existing list before sending to it. If a chunk of it was collected without proper consent, it’s better to find out before you email it than after.

Email That Sounds Like You and Connects to Everything Else

Our director, Dr Ram Mohan, is a publisher and editor with Australia India News. Publishing teaches you quickly which openings get abandoned and which get read to the end — which is precisely the skill email marketing requires, and precisely what most campaign templates lack.

Connected to the rest of your marketing

Email works best when it isn’t a silo. Your ad campaigns capture addresses, which feed your list. Your blog articles become the newsletter content that keeps people engaged between promotions. Your customer list builds lookalike audiences for Meta ads. Your social media drives signups.

Because we run all of it, those loops close instead of running in parallel.

Writing for a diverse audience

Through years of work with the Ethnic Communities Council Queensland and the Australia India Business Council, we understand that Australia’s customer base isn’t one audience. A campaign calendar that recognises Diwali, Lunar New Year and Eid alongside the usual retail moments reaches customers most competitors send nothing to on the days they’re most receptive.

Email Marketing Questions

How often should we email our list?

For most businesses, somewhere between fortnightly and monthly for the newsletter, plus automated sequences triggered by what people do. Too infrequent and people forget who you are; too frequent without enough value and they unsubscribe. We'll recommend a cadence based on your industry and what you've got to say.

My list is small. Is it worth it?

Often more worth it than you'd think. A list of 300 engaged past customers can outperform thousands of cold subscribers. And starting the automation now means it's compounding by the time the list is large.

Can I email customers who haven't explicitly subscribed?

Sometimes — the Spam Act allows inferred consent in defined circumstances, such as an existing customer relationship where the email relates to what they bought. But it's narrower than most people assume. We'll audit your list and tell you what you can safely send to.

Which email platform should we use?

Depends on what you sell. E-commerce businesses generally get the most from Klaviyo because of its Shopify integration. B2B with long sales cycles suits ActiveCampaign or HubSpot. Simple newsletters run fine on Mailchimp or Campaign Monitor. We'll recommend based on your needs, not on whichever we have a partnership with.

Who writes the emails?

Our copywriters, with your approval before anything sends. Once you're comfortable with the voice, most clients move to approving the monthly plan rather than each email.

What's a good open rate?

Open rates have been unreliable since Apple's Mail Privacy Protection started pre-loading images — it inflates the figure for a large share of recipients. We track them for trend comparison but judge campaigns on clicks, conversions and revenue.
